Fiery moment Nat Barr confronts Anthony Albanese about an issue on the minds of many Australians: ‘It is an epidemic’

Sunrise presenter Nat Barr has demanded Anthony Albanese and Jim Chalmers tackle the ‘epidemic’ of violence against women following the death of a young mother.

Molly Ticehurst, 28, was found dead at her home in Forbes in the NSW Central West early on Monday morning. Her ex-boyfriend, Daniel Billings, 29, has been charged with murder.

Police said Ms Ticehurst’s young child was not at the home where she was found and is safe.

The dead woman’s ex-boyfriend had been arrested on April 5 on serious charges but was released on bail about two weeks ago, The Daily Telegraph reports.

“This man was known to authorities,” Nat Barr told Anthony Albanese in Sunrise Tuesday morning.

“This morning, as the Budget approaches, can you promise us that the leaders of this country have a plan to prevent women from being murdered by someone they know?

‘We do this story every week, Prime Minister. Well, all those stories are one too many.’

Teacher’s assistant and young mother Molly Ticehurst, 28, was found dead in a house on Young Street in Forbes, NSW, about 1.50am on Monday.

Mr Albanese agreed that the story was “horrific” and that “as governments we need to do more”.

‘As a society we need to talk about this. We need men and boys to discuss these issues and provide support to women who are in this situation, and we also need laws to keep up with this,” the Prime Minister said.

“We need to support domestic violence funding for things like housing so women have somewhere to escape.

‘So they don’t feel like they’re trapped in a relationship.

‘One of the reasons we changed the single parenting allowance in this year’s Budget was so that women did not feel they had a choice to escape an abusive relationship because of their finances.

‘That was one of Anne Summers’ findings in her extremely important report that she prepared for us.

“So we need to do more as a society, Nat.

‘It is obviously completely unacceptable that this is happening and that it is so widespread.’

Barr appeared unimpressed by the response and demanded that Mr. Albanese speak to the treasurer before the budget.

“Can you and Jim Chalmers talk about this?” she said.

“It’s an epidemic, men are getting bail and crimes are being committed.

“We’re tearing our hair out… it’s absolutely horrendous and there are families all over Australia at the bottom of this pile and it’s heartbreaking.”

Mrs Ticehurst’s father Tony described Molly as a ‘beautiful’ person and said she was loved by many.

He told Nine News he was furious her former partner had been released on bail.

“If they had kept him in jail like the police wanted, we wouldn’t be having this conversation,” he said.

Billings was arrested Monday in Fifield, about 60 miles northwest of Forbes.

He was refused bail and will appear in Orange Local Court.
