An excellent first-half goal from Victor Osimhen and a late decider from Giovanni Simeone gave Napoli a 2-1 home win against Roma on Sunday and took another step towards the end of their 33-year wait to win. the Serie A title.
Napoli is alone at the top of the league with 53 points from 20 matches, 13 ahead of second-placed Inter Milan. Roma is sixth with 37 points.
Kim Min-Jae came close to an own goal for Napoli after 12 minutes when he misjudged goalkeeper Alex Meret’s position and headed the ball just to the right of the open goal.
Victor Osimhen scored his 14th league goal of the season to give Napoli the lead 17 minutes later.
Roma applied pressure and equalized with Stephan El Shaarawy’s shot at the far post.
Osimhen, Serie A’s top scorer, put Napoli ahead in the 17th minute when he chested a cross inside the box and volleyed the ball into the roof of the net.
The 24-year-old Nigerian has scored 14 times in Serie A this season.
Meret was forced to make a full-length save to save Bryan Cristante’s header from a corner in the 61st minute. Roma goalkeeper Rui Patricio saved a shot from a Napoli counter-attack three minutes later.
Roma equalized in the 75th minute when substitute Stephan El Shaarawy slipped from his marker and struck a cross from a sharp angle.
Four minutes before stoppage time, Simone received the ball on the edge of the box, spun around and slotted it into the top right corner, sending the fans at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium into a frenzy.
