Naomi Osaka reveals the precious item she asked to be rescued from her LA home as she competes in Australian Open

Naomi Osaka has revealed that her Los Angeles home was just three blocks away from last week’s devastating wildfires in the city – prompting her to have a precious item rescued.

The Japanese tennis star, who is currently competing in the Australian Open, began to panic as the bushfires burned very close to home following her first-round victory over France’s Caroline Garcia on Monday.

While also paying tribute to LA residents, Osaka admitted she asked someone to rescue her daughter’s birth certificate from the $8.6 million property in the Tarzana neighborhood, fearing it could be ‘burned down’ become.

“I looked at the fire map and the fire is about three blocks from my house,” she said in her post-match interview. “So I had someone get my daughter’s birth certificate because I didn’t know what would happen if it burned down.

‘But I think so [I am] sending all my love to LA. I know we hear about fires, but I in particular didn’t know how devastating it could be.

“I just hope everyone is doing well and I’m sending them all my love.”

Thousands of homes have been destroyed by the LA wildfires, while the death toll currently stands at 24.

Sixteen of the 24 deaths were attributed to the Eaton fire and eight to the Palisades fire, according to the Los Angeles County coroner’s office.

Twelve people were missing in the Eaton Fire zone and four were missing in the Palisades Fire, Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said. Investigators were trying to find out if some of the missing could be among the dead.

Osaka, who bought her five-bedroom Tarzana apartment after selling her previous Beverly Hills home in 2022, gave birth to daughter Shai, one, in the summer of 2023.

However, on the eve of the Australian Open, she announced that after six years together she has divorced the father of her child – rapper Cordae.

The 27-year-old said in a statement on Instagram that she and Cordae are “no longer in a relationship” but remain on good terms.

“No bad blood at all, he’s a great person and a great father,” she added.

“Honestly, I’m really glad our paths crossed because my daughter is my greatest blessing and I have been able to grow a lot through our experiences together.”
