Naomi Osaka appears to have suggested that she is pregnant and will therefore miss the remainder of the 2023 season.
The four-time Grand Slam champion last week withdrew from this month’s Australian Open without giving an official reason for her withdrawal, but on Wednesday she appeared to give context to her decision by posting a scanned baby photo on Instagram.
“Can’t wait to get back on the court, but here’s a little update on life for 2023,” Osaka’s caption read.
Naomi Osaka has announced that she will miss the 2023 season after revealing that she is pregnant with her first child.
Osaka withdrew from the Australian Open last week, but did not explain her reasons at the time.
She added: ‘The last few years have been interesting to say the least, but I think it’s the most challenging times in life that can be the most fun.
“These few months away from the sport have really given me a new love and appreciation for the game to which I have dedicated my life. I realize that life is very short and I don’t take any moment for granted, every day is a new blessing and adventure.
Osaka’s post on her Instagram page on Wednesday explained that she would miss the 2023 season.
Osaka posted her comments along with an image of an ultrasound of a baby.
Osaka will return to the tennis court in 2024 and has said she will participate in next year’s Australian Open.
“I know I have a lot to look forward to in the future, one thing I look forward to is my son watching one of my games and saying to someone, ‘that’s my mom.’
“2023 will be a year full of lessons for me and I hope to see you at the beginning of the next one because I will be in Aus 2024.”
