Nancy Pelosi reveals the brutal reason she wanted Biden to drop out of the 2024 race and the ‘guilt’ she feels over her husband Paul’s hammer attack
Nancy Pelosi revealed the brutal reason she wanted President Joe Biden to withdraw from the presidential race, admitting she feels guilty about attacking her husband Paul Pelosi.
The President Emerita has been on a television tour promoting her memoir, “The Art of Power,” which comes out Tuesday. In interviews, she has been candid about Biden’s re-election prospects.
“I asked for a campaign that would win. And I didn’t see that coming,” she told ABC’s Good Morning America on Monday.
But she denies reports that she led a pressure campaign to get Biden to withdraw from the race.
“The only person I talked to about this was the president. Other people called me to ask what their opinion was, but I rarely called back, let alone initiated one myself,” she said.

She also admitted feeling guilty about the 2022 attack on her husband Paul in their San Francisco home.
“What was sad about my husband’s situation is he’s not very political. They came after me. And I feel guilty that he’s paying the price,” she told ABC’s George Stephanopoulos.
She noted that she did not want “families to feel threatened because someone in their family is serving in the public interest.”
Paul Pelosi was attacked with a hammer during a burglary at the couple’s San Francisco home in 2022. A federal grand jury found David DePape guilty of aattempted kidnapping of a federal official and assault on an immediate family member of a federal official.
DePape was sentenced to 30 years in prison.
Paul Pelosi testified at trial that on the day of the break-in, he was awakened by “a very large man” with a hammer and zip ties who asked, “Where’s Nancy?”
When he told his attacker that his wife was in Washington, D.C., DePape allegedly told him to tie him up and that they would wait until she returned. Paul Pelosi suffered a fractured skull in the attack.

The former speaker has spent much of her interviews praising Biden for leaving the race, even telling CBS he belongs on Mount Rushmore.
There are reports that Biden is angry with her for her role in his impeachment. Pelosi worked behind the scenes to calm panicked Democrats after Biden’s first debate appearance, during which he stared into space and struggled to answer questions.
Democrats feared that with Biden in the lead, they would lose the House of Representatives, the Senate and the White House.
It was said that Pelosi passed these messages to the White House.
Publicly, she has always said she trusts Biden to make the right decision, a message she reiterated in Monday’s interview.
“I have the utmost respect for the president,” she told GMA. “I think he will be one of the most influential presidents in our country. I want him, his legacy, to be recognized and preserved.”
“I didn’t ask him to resign. I asked for a campaign that would win. And I didn’t see that coming,” she said.
She also explained what it takes to run a winning campaign: ‘Winning an election is a decision. You make a decision to win and you make every decision in favor of winning, in terms of how you mobilize at the grassroots level and take the ground to get the vote. How you have a message that is bold and progressive but not threatening to the public. And how you have the money to do that, to attract that largely from small donors. And then the most important decision is the candidate.’
