Sydney Swans wore black armbands to Saturday’s AFL Grand Final, although there was confusion among footy fans over who the finalists were paying tribute to in the MCG.

Each Swans player wore a black armband on their left arm during the showpiece – the garment was usually worn in tribute to a figure who has recently passed away.

Still, there was no mention of the tribute – or who it was intended for – by the Swans on their official Twitter or website, causing confusion among fans online.

It was suggested that the bracelets were a tribute to Tom and Paddy McCartin’s grandmother

“Maybe a stupid question, but who are the black bracelets for?” a fan asked on Twitter.

A Sydney fan account suggested the bracelets pay tribute to the grandmother of Swans duo Tom and Paddy McCartin, who died earlier this week.

“We’ve had an interesting week,” their father told Matt 3AW before bouncing.

“Unfortunately my wife’s mother had a stroke and passed away on Tuesday so we’ve had a bit of a rough week but we’re super excited about today and the kids are really excited about the opportunity that’s ahead of us.

“It has been an incredible shock, we are devastated. She was such a beautiful woman. Footy has been a great distraction for us.”
