The bodybuilding community is in mourning following the death of former Mr Olympia competitor Neil Currey, who tragically passed away on Monday at the age of 34.
Currey’s former coach Milos Sarcev announced the tragic news on social media, describing it as “heartbreaking” and “absolutely shocking.”
The cause of death has not been officially confirmed, but Sarcev’s first Instagram post stated suicide, although this detail was later edited and removed.
Sarcev wrote: “Absolutely shocking, heartbreaking news – that my former athlete @neil_currey died today… took his own life.
“My last/best memory of him was this smiling face after he won the New York Pro and fulfilled his lifelong dream of qualifying for the Mr. Olympia.

Born in the United Kingdom, Currey took up bodybuilding in 2017 and finished fifth in the pro muscle category at the World Championships.
He then competed against some of the best competitors in the world and in 2022, Currey finished first in the New York Pro and punched his ticket for the Mr. Olympia competition.
Later that year, Currey achieved his dreams on the Mr Olympia podium, finishing 16th in the Classic Physique category.
Tributes to Currey poured online as news of his death emerged.
‘Without a doubt one of my most favorite bodybuilders. Taken too soon,” one fan wrote on X.
‘This is so sad. Thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends,” wrote another.
Another fan posted on X: ‘What a tragic loss! That inspiration since my first thoughts in this bodybuilding world came from people like #NeilCurrey. That inspiration will never be lost! RIP one of the biggest!!!’

Prominent bodybuilding news site RX Muscle posted a message on Instagram: ‘Stunned and extremely saddened by the tragic news that Neil Currey has passed away at the young age of 34. We extend our sincerest and deepest condolences to Neil’s family, friends and to all his fans around the world.”
Currey’s death comes just days after the death of bodybuilding pioneer Lisa Lyon.
