Mystery surrounds death of top jockey aged just 35 as sport is thrown into mourning

The racing world has been plunged into mourning with news of the death of highly respected New Zealand jockey Johnathan Parkes at the age of just 35.

The champion jockey rode more than 1000 winners in New Zealand, including 62 black type races and 12 at Group 1 level.

The Kiwi star, who reportedly died on Friday evening, last rode in Hastings on September 7.

The racing community came together for an emotional tribute at Ellerslie Racecourse on Saturday.

New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing acknowledged Parkes’ passing with a statement.

“On behalf of the New Zealand racing industry, NZTR is deeply saddened to learn that highly respected jockey Johnathan Parkes passed away last night,” the statement began.

“Our thoughts are with Johnathan’s close family and friends at this time.

‘Johnathan was one of our best and rode more than 1,000 winners in New Zealand. Parkes won 62 black races, including 12 Group 1 races.”

The stunning news has led to tributes from across the racing world.

Thoroughbred owner Steve Donovan tweeted: ‘Absolutely stunned to hear of the passing of NZ Jockey Johnathan Parkes. He was really talented, he rode a few horses for me including Tiptronic, I would have used him every time. Again, if someone is struggling, please call. Talk to someone. It’s never that bad.’

Broadcaster Aidan Rodley wrote: ‘Twelve-time Group 1 winning jockey with over 1000 wins to his name. Just tragic; terrible news. Thoughts with so many in New Zealand racing who are mourning Johnathan’s death.’

The Australian Jockey’s Association wrote: ‘On behalf of the AJ A, we send our prayers and love to the NZ racing community following the passing of the great NZ jockey Johnathan Parkes. RIP Champion.”

Another racing fan wrote: ‘Very sad to hear of the passing of Johnathan Parkes. JP was one of New Zealand’s very best, with more than 1000 winners. Parkes won 62 black races, including 12 Group Ones, and also won on I WISH I WIN on his debut. Our thoughts go out to his family.’
