- An investigation is underway after family members visiting San Diego over the holidays found the severely decomposed body of a relative
Family members visiting San Diego over the holidays were shocked to find their relative's severely decomposed body in a chest freezer in the home.
The family alerted San Diego police, who launched an investigation into the death following the discovery on December 23. The homicide unit is investigating due to the nature of the discovery.
The identity of the person has not been made public nor the cause of death, but officials have said the body is a woman.
“It's very surprising and scary and it gives me chills because I've never heard anything like it before,” said neighbor Ana Marie Mierau. ABC San Diego.
“I started seeing the police everywhere, and I thought, 'That's something big,'” said another, Teresa Morrison.
The gruesome discovery was made on December 23 and police were called just before noon

'It was worrying because I go for a walk and I think, “What's going on here?” It's a bit too much,” Mierau also said.
The San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office will conduct tests to determine the cause of death.
“Essentially, family members from out of town were at a home and found a body in a chest freezer. The body is believed to be that of a female, but other physical details such as age or race cannot be confirmed until identification is made,” San Diego police said in a statement.
