Mystery as male and female firefighter ex-high school sweethearts are found dead in car a week after vanishing

Two Georgia firefighters who were high school sweethearts were mysteriously found dead in a car in Tennessee, prompting a week-long search for them.

Reagan Anderson and Chandler Kuhbander, both 24, disappeared from the parking lot of a Crunch gym on June 24. After the pair allegedly left in Anderson’s car, authorities launched a multi-state search.

Their bodies were found in the vehicle more than 720 kilometers away on Sunday, but police have not yet released details about the cause of death or how they were found.

According to Kuhbander’s mother, they had been in a “toxic” relationship for seven years. Anderson took the recent breakup seriously and threatened to commit suicide. Her son was also being harassed.

Kuhbander was last seen leaving a Crunch gym in Savannah, Georgia, where his mother, Jane, said he “walked out of the building looking very comfortable, like he had just worked out.”

“He doesn’t look rushed when he’s walking through the parking lot,” she told WJCL. “We don’t see him again after that.”

Kuhbander’s mother said she saw on surveillance footage that Anderson was walking around the gym parking lot several times while he was inside.

Security footage showed him walking to his car, but Kuhbander’s mother said she believes he got into her Ford Focus “under duress.” They claimed his car never left the parking garage and his family later picked him up.

It appears the pair went for a drive together. Anderson was last seen on surveillance footage at a gas station in South Carolina that day, the same spot where Kuhbander’s phone last picked up a signal from a cell tower.

Officials have not disclosed why the former couple was driving together or what their intended destination was.

After a week-long search that included pleas from both families for help finding the two, Hinesville, Georgia, police said Sunday that they were both found dead in the car in Cocke County, Tennessee.

Kuhbander’s mother said she last spoke to her son a few days before he disappeared. She said he told her Anderson had been harassing him after their breakup.

“He told me she blew up his phone and threatened to kill herself,” she said.

“And it’s not the first time she’s done that.”

Two days before they disappeared, Anderson was arrested after spotting Kuhbander on a date with another woman and allegedly scratching his car.

Kuhbander’s mother told WJCL that she posted bail and was charged with criminal damage to property and disturbing the peace.

She claimed that Anderson wrote a suicide letter to her son on the day they disappeared and that he continued to comfort her despite their breakup in the days before.

“He’s very passionate about doing the right thing and making sure people are safe,” she added on Court TV. “He really cares about Reagan.”

Amid many unanswered questions about what happened to the couple or how they died, an autopsy is reportedly being prepared to determine the cause of death.

“Details regarding the discovery of their bodies, vehicle and the events leading up to their deaths are not available at this time,” police said in a statement.

In a heartbreaking post on Facebook, Kuhbander’s sister said she “tried to find the words to say goodbye, but couldn’t.”

“It tears me apart to think that you are gone. Never in my life did I think I would have to live life without you,” she wrote.

“They’ve always been my two big brothers, but now it’s just me and Xander. We will honor you in every way we can. No one will ever not know who you are and what a good person you are. I love you forever bub.”
