Enzo Maresca says that Mykhailo Mudryk is ‘like flipping a coin’, because you never know which way you’re going to go. That’s how unpredictable the Ukrainian is, who can frustrate and fascinate fans with his performances.
Mudryk found himself in a great position during Chelsea’s 2-0 Conference League win over Servette but still made several errors as Maresca continually coached him from his technical area.
Asked about his performance, Maresca said: ‘This is Misha, this is Mudryk, not only in terms of tonight but also in terms of since he joined the club. He had some good moments and then some moments like he flipped a coin. You don’t know if it’s one or the other.
“This is Misha. If he can become more consistent, he can take a step forward.”
Mudryk has all the makings but has never really fulfilled his potential since signing a deal worth £89m in January 2023, when Arsenal wanted him too.
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca claimed Mykhailo Mudryk is ‘like flipping a coin’ as you never know which way you’re going to go with the unpredictable Ukrainian winger
Mudryk got into a good position against Servette, but then made several mistakes
Maresca stressed that he is determined to help Mudryk and promised to improve his decision-making
“We’re going to try to help him change,” Maresca added. “He has to try to understand that we’re going to give him the ball in the final third. And when he’s there [it’s about] making the right decision.
‘For me, most of Misha’s mistakes are not so much about quality or technical error, but about choice.
“Sometimes he has to play and he tries to do something else and we lose the ball. Sometimes he has to play one-on-one, it’s about making decisions. Hopefully we can help him and improve that.”
