My husband lied and booked economy seats for me and my toddler

A mother sparked outrage after revealing how her husband lied and booked cheap seats for her and their young son on their long-haul flight, while he enjoys business class thanks to her company.

Lead to British breeding site momsnetshe explained how her job had paid her to fly, but insisted that she and her young son be bought premium economy seats if they were to accompany them on the trip.

The unidentified woman, believed to be from the UK, explained that it was six weeks before the flight that she realized her husband had just booked them into economy class and seats could not be changed.

She said: ‘Long haul flight on Friday – 14 hour flight. DH was going for a week of work and wanted me and DS (2) to go and go on vacation. I only agreed to go if DS and I are flying premium economy as it’s a long way, I’ll be alone with a small child while DH is in business class (work paid for her ticket).

‘DH said ok, no problem, he had a lot of points to use. We booked the flights. He told me that he had booked premium. Six weeks later, I find out that he lied and basically booked the cheapest economy tickets available (no seat reservation/upgrade option).’

Tried calling the airline but premium economy was fully booked one way and there was room the other way but at a cost of £2k so I said no.

“I didn’t think much of it, just that at check-in I could choose seats – at no time has there been an option to select seats / pay to select seats, except at the time of booking.

Anyway, I have tried to check-in three days before and I can only check-in at the airport. DS and I have been assigned middle and aisle seats.

“We’re next to each other, which is great, but not ideal, I would have wanted the window/middle or two center bench seats on the plane (I got an inflatable footrest hoping DS could sleep, since he it’s an overnight flight, but now you can ‘not use as we’re stuck with middle and aisle seats).’

She expressed her anger by calling her husband selfish and hinted that he was thoughtless.

She continued: ‘I’ve gone crazy with my DH because I think he’s a selfish jerk who went too tight to book a seat reservation when booking. Meanwhile, he enjoys it in business class. I called the airline but they told me that seats cannot be changed.

‘AIBU [am I being unreasonable] be upset with DH? AIBU to get him out of business class so he can do his part of parenting?

I doubt we’ll be able to trade midway through, but I was wondering if I could get DS to sleep with him since he’ll be able to lay down. I’m worried that if DS has the middle seat and if he sleeps, I’ll have to wake him up to let the person in the window seat through.

People were quick to share their outrage and expressed their horror at her husband’s actions. Some commentators came to question her marriage.

One person responded to the thread on Mumsnet and told the ‘OP’, or original poster: ‘Sounds awful.’

While a second commented: ‘No way I would go. You’re assuming too much OP and you’re going to be furious with him.

Tell him you stay home and have a safe trip. Seriously, if you go you’ll be too mad to be amused and tell him he can get away with it.

And a third said of the husband’s lie: ‘This was just dropped there like it didn’t matter. In my opinion, it’s the most important thing you’ve ever written. What is your justification for this?

‘And why are you the one calling and trying to figure this out? Does her husband often treat her with such disrespect? I would not go on vacation.

A fourth added: ‘Err, why are we just glossing over your huge lie? I would not go.

As the comments progressed, more people said that she shouldn’t go on the trip at all.

Someone else asked, ‘What’s his excuse for lying right to your face? I would not go at all in these circumstances.

Another outraged user said: ‘This is so far from anything DH would do as to be totally incomprehensible. You know your own DH better, but I would be questioning my entire marriage of 22 years.

“For a business trip, I could tell him, go on business and get some sleep, DC and I will be fine in economics… but he will certainly ask my opinion. Could you switch mid-flight perhaps?’

And a fifth suggested: ‘Obviously just trade tickets with DH and he, if you try to get close, says he doesn’t know you. He enjoys the champagne.

However, some suggested that they change seats mid-flight to make things fairer.
