My favorite Prime Video sci-fi series just got canceled and I’m devastated
Canceling TV shows is never easy, especially when they happen suddenly and leave a lot of unanswered questions. Unfortunately, this is the case for Out of rangewhich was not renewed for a third season despite many question marks.
The series starring Josh Brolin is ending after two seasons, meaning we won’t see any more of Royal Abbott and the endless mysteries that continue to unfold in and around his ranch. Unless of course it gets picked up somewhere else, and I can only hope it does, because I’m going to miss it terribly.
It’s a shame that such a unique series is being canceled on Prime Video. Out of range combined sci-fi, thriller, and western elements to create an intriguing story with plenty of mystery. Beyond that, this combination of genres made for some truly beautiful cinematography, with some picturesque landscapes and an ominous feel throughout, something I haven’t really experienced since Westworldwhich also beautifully combined the sci-fi and western atmosphere.
Out of range‘s future is currently unknown, with news of its cancellation only just confirmed at the time of writing. We can only hope it picks up somewhere else, especially since we’ve been praising the series ever since season two was announced.
Why was Outer Range cancelled?
While Prime Video has not yet confirmed a reason for the cancellation, it is disappointing news considering Variety reports that: “Amazon does not release viewing figures for their shows, although Out of range reached the Nielsen Top 10 original streaming charts, reaching #3 the week after its premiere.”
So there was clearly a lot of interest in the series, which also marked Brolin’s first TV project in 20 years, and his last in In the West in 2005. Although he did provide the narration for the documentary series Humanity: The Story of Us All and the voice of Thanos in What if…?, it was Out of range that was his first major project for the small screen and a welcome return.
Season two also ended on a pretty frustrating note, leaving the door open for a season three that may never happen. The season finale saw a lot of twists, including more about the hole that appeared on Royal’s ranch, and some mind-bending time travel stuff. It got so crazy that one of the most asked questions on Google is “what the hell was Out of range over?”, which is honestly a fair question!
People’s confusion about the time travel storyline makes the cancellation even more galling, because we may never get any answers to what’s going on here. What’s up with the strange newcomer Autumn? Did Perry replace herself with a different version of itself through time travel? There’s so much to explore in season three and potentially beyond, so right now we don’t have a satisfying ending for one of Prime Video’s best shows.
With a great supporting cast including Imogen Poots, Lili Taylor and Tom Pelphrey, I’m devastated that we may not get to know more about these characters. Hopefully there will be some clarity on the reasons behind Out of range‘s cancellation, but until then, the first two seasons are available to stream on Prime Video.
