My daughter took money out of her college fund to go to a TV show convention – she can say goodbye to the rest of the money

After setting aside money for nearly 18 years to put his daughter through college, one father was furious when he learned she had taken some of the money out of the account to attend a TV convention.

Going to Reddit’sAm I the hole? Thread, the irate father, who appears to be in the US, explained that he and his wife have been putting money into a college fund since his daughter was a baby.

“It’s a significant chunk of money and has involved many donations from family, as well as her own savings at times,” he explained in the post.

“We have always made it clear that the money there is only for the university,” he continued. “She never had to put her savings there (has a separate savings account), but she did it anyway.”

In Reddit’s ‘Am I The A**hole’ thread, the irate father explained that he and his wife have been putting money into a college fund since his daughter was a baby – only to find out she took some with her on vacation .

The parent explained that his daughter’s girlfriend lives in Australia, and they are both big fans of the TV show Supernatural.

“They’ve both wanted to go to a conference for years – at least five as I can remember,” he explained.

He explained that two of the actors will be at a convention in Australia, and she begged him to let her go, but he said no.

“But the scam happens after she turns 18,” he explained. “I can’t stop her if she pays for it.”

“I assumed she would use her savings,” he continued, but he was shocked when he checked her college fund account and discovered some money was missing.

“I went to talk to my daughter about it and she admitted to using the money to pay for the conference,” he recalls. ‘She bought plane tickets for herself, plane tickets for her friend (other side of the country), both scammed tickets and booked a hotel.

“It will last three or four days, but she plans to stay a few weeks and make it a vacation,” he added. “All in all, she earned about 10,000 euros.”

The fuming dad admitted he ‘lost it’ when he found out.

“(I) demanded that she cancel, but it fell on deaf ears,” he said. “I tried to cancel for her, but she doesn’t get everything back, so I’m hesitant to do that.”

However, the man’s daughter insists that it is ‘her’ money and that she can do whatever she wants with it.

“(She) claims she still has enough for college and that this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” he recalled. ‘I believe this has shown her extreme immaturity and inability to manage her future and money.

“I’m so incredibly angry that she would do this,” he complained.

The furious parent took to Reddit to share the story, where many people sympathized with him but thought his punishment was harsh.

However, the father reacted somewhat reflexively to the trip, telling his daughter she could “say goodbye to the rest of her college fund” and closing the account.

”I am now the only person with access. She has said she will pay it back, but that seems unlikely,” he admitted.

He added that his wife thinks he is being callous, and admitted that his daughter contributed $5,000 so she really only has to pay back the remaining $5,000, which his mother-in-law has since said she will pay back.

“I think this just teaches her that she can get out of trouble,” he protested. “I was sure of my decision, but everyone is acting like I’m the asshole.”

Users were mixed in their responses, with some claiming she had been working and also saving, so we were entitled to some of the money.

“Yet daughter herself contributed $5,000 to the bill…she clearly earned that and kept it somehow,” one user wrote. “So it seems like my daughter understands money somewhat, better than a lot of people, to be honest.”

Others said setting up the savings account – which his daughter apparently also seemed to have access to – could also have given her the wrong idea.

“She was allowed to put her own money in and was given full access… I really don’t think it’s entirely up to her that she treats it as her own savings instead of a college fund since that’s how it was treated to begin with. with,” another commented.

“I just don’t understand how anyone benefits from this,” another added. “So now she can’t go to college without taking out a student loan? Is that the end result here? That will hurt her for the rest of her life because of something stupid she did as a child.

“I think it’s okay to lock the account so she can’t spend it frivolously, and it’s okay to want her to pay it back,” they continued. no university at all.’
