My Boyfriend Died In An Accident Days Before I Found Out I Was Pregnant — But I’m Still Lucky To Have Our Baby

The girlfriend of a late British boxer who gave birth to his son eight months after he died snorkeling in Australia says she feels “lucky” and describes their baby as a “miracle”.

Ellyn Rungay, 28, from Essex, gave birth to Jesse Cameron Rungay-Shaw in July this year, who weighed 7 pounds 4 oz.

But tragically, Jesse will never get to meet his father Cam Shaw, 25, who died last October while snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef with Ellyn and two friends.

Cam was a boxer and won the Elite 60kg title of the Amateur Boxing Association in 2018 and the gold medal at the prestigious Hivdovre Box Cup in Denmark the year before.

He turned pro but his career was put on hold due to Covid.

Now Ellyn has described Jesse, who was born on July 4, as an “amazing little miracle” and said Cam “would think he can’t believe what happened.”

She said: “I’m sure Cam shines on all of us – he’d probably think he can’t believe what happened.

“He’s the most amazing little miracle.

“It was a great delivery, everything went very well.

“I can’t believe he’s really here.

“It has been a whirlwind of emotions, but we are so thankful that he is here and that he is healthy.

“He has brought much joy.”

Unfortunately, Ellyn didn’t know she was pregnant until after his death.

Cameron enjoyed success in his amateur boxing career before his life was tragically cut short at just 25 years old

But she chose Jesse’s name because it was one that “she and Cam both loved” and she knows “he would have approved.”

Ellyn, who dated Cam for seven months before his death, said: ‘Jesse means gift from God and that’s what he is.

“When we talked about the future, Jesse was a name that Cam loved and I both loved, so in a way we chose that one and I know he would have approved.”

Ellyn lives in Essex with her parents Chris and Keri, but Cam’s parents Rod and Nova came from York before the birth.

They’ve also been to see Ellyn and Jesse several times, and she’s planning a trip to visit Cam’s family in the coming weeks.

But Ellyn has said she is “so happy” with all the support and that Cam would be “so happy” that his family and Ellyn’s family are together.

She said, ‘I’m so lucky.

Despite the tragic circumstances surrounding her son’s death, Ellyn says she is “lucky” thanks to the support she has received from both families.

According to Ellyn, Cam is “so happy” with the bond she shares with his family, and how close everyone has become since his death and the birth of Jesse (pictured).

“I have my parents and Cam’s parents, everyone has been so supportive.

‘I can’t wait to get to York to show him off to the rest of Cam’s family and friends.

“Cam would just be so happy that my family and his family are all together, we’re like one big family.

“His friends were great, it was great how everyone just came together.”

An inquest was opened by a corner at Northallerton Coroners Court in North Yorks. on November 22, confirming that Cam had drowned.
