My boyfriend and I canceled our Netflix subscription but it sparked a bizarre family feud

  • An irritated woman, 25, recently took to Reddit to ask for advice
  • She said her partner’s aunt became furious with them for canceling Netflix
  • She added that his aunt and mother have now labeled her a “bastard.”

A woman has revealed how she and her boyfriend canceled their Netflix account, sparking a bizarre family feud.

The woman, 25, took to Reddit on Monday to ask for advice after she said her partner’s aunt became furious with them for terminating their subscription to the streaming service.

She explained in a after shared on the subreddit Am I the A**hole? that she and her boyfriend, 26, originally paid for a range of platforms including Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime and Netflix, which he let his family members use for free.

But this weekend they decided to cancel Netflix because they realized they weren’t using it much.

She said her boyfriend then received a call from his irate aunt, who started “lecturing” him about “finances.”

“This weekend we decided to cancel our Netflix since we weren’t using it and decided that if we ever want to watch something, we’ll buy it again,” she wrote.

‘So his aunt calls and starts lecturing him about his finances, [saying] that he shouldn’t spend so much money that he doesn’t have enough left to pay for Netflix and she’s using it and he should pay.’

The woman explained that she listened to the phone call and told her boyfriend to tell his aunt that she could pay for Netflix herself if she wanted to.

The 25-year-old woman took to Reddit on Monday to ask for advice after she said her partner’s aunt became furious with them for terminating their subscription to the streaming service.

But the Reddit poster’s response to the situation did not go down well with his aunt, who has now told the rest of her boyfriend’s family.

She added that they had also canceled Disney+ a few months earlier, which had also angered his mother.

“Now the aunt has talked to his mother and they say I’m an asshole because I ‘force’ my boyfriend to spend all his money on me so he can’t pay for the things they need,” revealed them.

She ended the post by asking other users if she was wrong, writing, “So, am I the asshole?”

Her post quickly went viral and many people quickly took her side.

‘Not the hole. If you want to be petty, you can tell them not to be so financially careless that they can’t afford to pay for their own streaming services,” someone replied.

“His family sounds like an absolute nightmare. I hope you don’t have to interact with them often.’

“How the hell are they going to talk about your finances and tap your streaming services?” someone else asked.

Another user added: ‘Do you know a good way to be responsible with your finances? Don’t pay for streaming services you don’t use.’

“Streaming services are not a basic necessity you owe to anyone, and it’s perfectly reasonable to cancel subscriptions you don’t use,” said a fourth comment.

‘If his family members are so keen to keep those shows going, they can certainly foot the bill themselves.

‘It’s a leap to accuse you of forcing him to spend his money on you just because you make financially responsible choices together.

“Looks like his family might need a subscription reality check.”

“I don’t understand why you’re being labeled the asshole for a collective decision you and your friend made. If anything, they’re assholes because they’re entitled to it,” said a fifth.
