My boss is furious that I didn’t give her my first class seat and stuck her in economy class, even though I used my own credit card points for the upgrade.

  • Reddit user was flying home from a conference and his boss didn’t seat him
  • Upon landing, he confronted him for his “disrespect for protocol”

An employee confronted an irate boss after flying with her on a company trip after she was offered a free upgrade to first class, and she didn’t.

The man, who was a frequent flyer with the airline and also had his own credit card, was offered the seat because of the flight points he had earned, leaving his boss stuck in economy class. Mirror reports.

In a Reddit post, he described how he was on his way home from a conference but was sitting apart from his boss.

But she was left furious after learning that he had upgraded to a luxury flight, leaving her behind.

He acknowledged that the company paid for his plane ticket, but stressed that they gave him the free upgrade for the use of his personal credit card and the trip.

The employee got in trouble with his boss after he was given a free upgrade to first class, based on his frequent flyer points and the use of his credit card, owned by the same company as the airline.

But his boss, who was stuck in the economy, got angry and accused him of having a “disrespect for protocol.”

Describing the situation as “crazy”, the anonymous user asked for the advice of others on whether he had acted reasonably.

He wrote: ‘After the flight, when we were collecting our bags, she said she wanted to talk to me about my ‘disrespect for protocol’.

‘She thinks that since the company paid for my original ticket, and she’s older than me, I should have given her the first class seat.

‘I think this is absolutely insane. Although the company paid for my seat, it is my own personal credit card expenses and frequent travel that earned me the upgraded seat.

‘Is this some kind of corporate standard that I’m not aware of?’

In the comments, he clarified that his company “allows us to use our miles, or personal money, to upgrade the cheap tickets they buy,” making his boss’s objection even more controversial.

The vast majority of Reddit posters were in complete agreement with the employee.

Several users suggested that she should report it to HR, with one advising her to describe the incident while damping down the complaint by asking if there were any protocols she should be aware of in the future.

He replied: ‘This is a really helpful suggestion. Thank you! She has retaliated against other employees who have raised concerns about her attitude with HR before, so this tact seems a bit more comfortable to me than a direct complaint.

A second wrote: “Your boss’s entitlement is amazing.”

A third added: “Your boss needs a reality check.”

One user, who identified himself as a ‘HR manager’, told the employee: ‘No employee is entitled to any other employee’s personal rewards.

“I had a general manager who traveled a lot for work, he used his personal credit card to pay for the rooms.

“He always used the same hotel and accumulated great prizes. Those are yours to keep and use. Our company reimbursed you for the rooms, but you originally reserved and paid for them.

‘[Your]the company paid for the original ticket but the upgrade was a personal reward. It is not a reward from the company.
