Musk adds major new privacy feature on X, the site formerly known as Twitter

Elon Musk, currently ranked as the richest person on earth with an estimated net worth of $226 billion, shifted his focus from the risks of artificial intelligence to another new feature on his social media site X (formerly known as Twitter).

Musk announced that users can now keep the posts they like private with a simple tap of the new ‘Hide Likes’ toggle.

“You can now hide your likes,” Musk told X, “but I recommend keeping them open and only bookmarking interesting posts.”

Musk introduced the “bookmarks” feature, which he considers a “de facto silent like,” after teasing the option months before his purchase of Twitter last year.

From a complete overhaul of the verification system to reinstating controversial accounts including Donald Trump and Andrew Tate, Musk has made some questionable changes since buying out Twitter last year.

In July of this year, Musk made perhaps his biggest change yet: he ditched the bird logo and changed Twitter to X.

The move was part of Musk’s broader effort to fit the site into his long-term ambitions for an “everything app” to rival China’s WeChat, which combines social media functionality with financial services, e-commerce and more.

Users responded Unpleasant Musk’s ‘hide likes’ announcement nowadays largely with jokes about the risqué content that users may not want to be seen publicly approving.

“If you have to hide your preferences,” said another, who goes by the platform @simp4azh, “I just assume you’re a lunatic.”
