Music buffs spark furious debate over ‘best one hit wonder ever’

Music lovers who prefer one-hits over the most played hits on the radio can now do themselves a big favor on National One-Hit Wonder Day.

Several X users have listed their favorites in honor of this day. Most of them were released between the 1980s and 2010s.

Hits like Gotye’s ‘Somebody I Used to Know’ and Aqua’s ‘Barbie Girl’ are just two of the many songs that became one-hit wonders.

However, there were also songs that weren’t mentioned, such as ‘Macarena’ by Los Del Rio and ‘Ice Ice Baby’ by Vanilla Ice.

Several X users who are fans of music from the eighties were convinced that A-ha’s ‘Take On Me’ was the best one-hit wonder ever.

The 1985 hit won six of the eight MTV Video Music Awards in 1986, and the music video was nominated for an American Music Award.

“One of my favorites is ‘Take On Me’ by a-ha. Although they had more success in Europe, this 1985 hit became iconic for its catchy melody and innovative video,” an X user tweeted.

Another song from the 80s that is popular among X-users is the 1982 hit “Come On Eileen” by Dexys Midnight Runners.

The song not only debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, but was also Britain’s best-selling single of 1982.

Other 80s classics mentioned by multiple X users included Tommy Tutone’s “867-5309/Jenny”, Toni Basil’s “Mickey”, and Simple Minds’ “Don’t You Forget About Me”.

The 1990s were full of one-hit wonders that kept popping up in the media over the years.

One song that X users mentioned more often was “Return of the Mack,” the 1996 hit by Mark Morrison that first reached the top three of the Billboard Hot 100.

“Today the Return of the Mack is being played,” said one X user wrote in response to a post from Pop Base.

Another song from the 90s that X users have mentioned multiple times is “You Get What You Give,” the most popular hit by New Radicals from their only studio album in 1998.

The group performed the song for the first time in more than 20 years at the inauguration of President Joe Biden, which Biden called “his family’s fight song.”

‘New Radicals’ ‘You Get What You Give’ has finally displaced ‘Walking on Sunshine’ from my favorite one-hit wonder, tweeted an X user.

Other one-hit wonders from the 1990s that have made social media rave include Chumbawamba’s “Tubthumping,” Los Del Rio’s “Macarena,” and Aqua’s “Barbie Girl.”

In the 2000s and 2010s, many songs were sung by Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift, but music lovers could still recite the lyrics of Psy and Carly Rae Jepsen’s one-hit wonders.

Psy’s “Gangnam Style” was a 2012 K-pop hit that went viral in the US, at one point becoming the most viewed video on YouTube.

He also performed regularly and, with the help of MC Hammer, got celebrities dancing to his “Gangnam Style” performance at the American Music Awards.

“Saying PSY is a one hit wonder… You’ll never understand the impact of that, that and mister,” an X user tweeted.

Although he only had one hit in the US, he is still popular in Korea and is seen as one of the musicians who made K-pop more popular in America.

Carly Rae Jepsen was known for her participation in Canadian Idol and after being praised by Justin Bieber, she released her number one hit ‘Call Me Maybe’ in 2011.

Not only was it the best-selling digital single worldwide in 2012, it also topped the Billboard Hot 100 for nine weeks.

“Call Me Maybe was too big, she didn’t stand a chance,” said one X user wrote.

While there are hundreds of one-hit wonders to choose from, it seems most X users have chosen ‘Somebody That I Used to Know’ as their favorite.

‘Anyone who doesn’t call Gotye out for Somebody That I Used To Know isn’t making a good choice,’ a fan tweeted.

The song won the 2013 Grammy Awards, winning Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. After Gotye’s fame faded, he stepped out of the spotlight.

‘I always wondered what happened to Gotye. Damn, just disappeared into thin air after “Now you’re just someone I used to know,” wrote one X user.
