Mungalli stolen car crash: Couple try to help driver before ute is stolen

A couple who stopped to help an injured driver following a motorway crash were left shocked after the stranger stole their vehicle and tried to run them over.

Taylor Skinner and her boyfriend saw an MG sedan hit a B-double truck head-on at 100km/h on the Palmerston Highway in Mungalli, Queensland, last Wednesday.

After stopping to check on the driver and passenger, the woman unexpectedly ran away and the limping man jumped into their SUV.

A truck driver attempted to block the road to prevent the driver from leaving. Ms Skinner was almost run over three times before the driver finally took off.

Ms Skinner later learned the MG sedan had been stolen and found sex toys and used needles littering the floor of the car which had been left in a heap on the side of the road.

Ms Skinner, a Cairns-based dog trainer, tried to get phone reception while her boyfriend told the couple not to move when they went out to help.

“I shouted ‘they stole my car’ and (another) truck driver blocked the highway,” Ms Skinner said. told the Cairns Post.

Her boyfriend chased the passenger down an embankment and pulled her onto the road by her hair so she could tell the man to get out of the car.

Both men had been seriously injured according to Ms Skinner, who said the woman was bleeding with an apparently broken arm and the man was limping.

Both were apparently wearing balaclavas and wanted to flee the scene as quickly as possible.

Unfortunately, by the time Ms Skinner’s boyfriend had returned with the woman, the suspected car thief was desperately trying to run them over.

“I turned around and he was trying to hit us with the car, and he tried to do it three times,” Ms Skinner continued.

To avoid injury, her boyfriend let the woman go before she limped into the good Samaritan’s black Mazda BT-50 who then fled the scene.

The balaclava-clad couple were lucky to survive, Ms Skinner said, describing what seemed like a “strange dream” which took place on the rural highway.

The injured couple became separated when help arrived, with the female passenger running off the road while the man limped into Ms Skinner’s Mazda BT-50 (pictured) and attempted to run her over.

Ms Skinner and her boyfriend were on their way from Innisfail to the Atherton Tablelands when it all happened.

After their Mazda was stolen, the couple found themselves stuck among a pile of debris from the tailgate which Ms Skinner said was dragged six meters during the crash.

She said it was the best decision to just let the injured couple drive away in their car so they could avoid the alleged wrath of the car thieves.

Police are now investigating the hit-and-run and told Ms Skinner they were almost sure they knew who the injured couple were.

No arrests have yet been made in connection with the two-vehicle crash and car theft.

Ms Skinner’s car was found by police in Moonin, 51km from the crash site.
