Mum’s genius clothes hanger hack will keep your house neat and tidy

Daughter shares ‘genius’ hanger trick she came across after her mother’s death: ‘Everyone should do this’

  • One woman shared the ultimate cleanliness and laundry hack
  • Her simple method can prevent clothes from piling up

One woman shared an extremely handy clothes hanger hack for staying ahead of your laundry and taking care of old clothes.

Cynthia, from the US, was cleaning out her mother’s closet after her passing when she discovered the secret method she used to keep her “technically clean” clothes from piling up.

The mother used numbered clothespins to keep track of how many times she had worn her clothes.

She then put it in the wash after the third time, which prevented any buildup on a chair.

Many people struggle with multiple piles of clothes that are not dirty enough to wash, but not clean enough to put back in the closet.

The mother had designated a special space in her closet to hang previously worn garments to avoid a mess.

Cynthia shared her discovery in a popular Facebook group.

“While cleaning out my mom’s clothes (she passed away a year ago) I came across a system she made and thought I could share it with all of you.”

The woman has also started using the method herself.

‘[My mum] numbered clothespins and hung them on the hanger of an item she was wearing. Once she wore it 3 times…in the wash it went. This stopped her from piling clothes in a chair.”

Many were impressed by the mom’s simple idea to promote tidiness β€” and shared some hacks of their own.

“It will also help eliminate clothes that are never worn,” said one woman.

‘I use different colored hangers. White is fresh, red has been worn once and for a short time.’

Another added: “What a great idea! I put the hanger backwards after the first wear and in the wash after the second time. Your mother’s method may be even better.’

A woman also uses room dividers commonly used in stores to separate her wardrobe.

β€œI use the ‘left’ system – I check the left side of my closet every six months because I hang everything I wash on the right side of a separator. You can also use them for clothes that need to be washed.’

Some merely practiced a proven technique for determining whether clothes should go through the wash.

“I’m practicing the ‘sniffing method’ – but this is a much better idea!”

β€œI’ll do the sniff and smudge test. If it doesn’t smell or have stains on it, I think I’m wearing it.’

But many were shocked that some people did not wash their clothes after every wear.

‘Personally, I can’t wear anything (nightgown is sometimes an exception) without washing it. After wearing it for an hour, I have to wash it before wearing it again,” said one woman.

She added, “I sweat a lot and no amount of deodorant or antiperspirant helps. I never want to be labeled as smelly.’

β€œDon’t you wash most clothes after every wear? Maybe it’s because I live in a hot country, but I would never wear a shirt twice. Jeans maybe, everything else goes in the wash after every wear.’
