Horror as a mummified body of a man is found in a house in Australia where his wife and stepson lived

  • Mummified body discovered in Gold Coast home
  • The police carried out a welfare check last month
  • Homicide detectives arrived to investigate

A man’s mummified body has been found in a Gold Coast home that was also home to his wife and stepson – as detectives investigate homicide cases.

The grim discovery was made after a family member from Canberra tried to visit the man. When she was refused entry to the house, she called the police and asked them to conduct a welfare check.

On April 17, officers went to the house on Edinburgh Road in Benowa and found the body of the 69-year-old in a bed at the house.

According to police, the man’s body was mummified, with no discernible injuries. Investigations indicate that the man may have been dead for two years.

No charges have been filed over his death, with a crime scene at the home and homicide detectives called in to investigate.

The relative who tried to visit the man was said to have been told by his stepson that he was unwell and had recently been hospitalized with an illness, police sources said.

However, when the relative called several nearby hospitals, she was told that the man had not been a patient at any of them. ABC reports.

She then contacted the police, who made the grim discovery last month.

According to police sources, the residents of the house rarely left the premises and had groceries and other supplies delivered.

Gold Coast Regional Crime Coordinator Detective Superintendent Brendan Smith told media the cause of death remains unclear.

“The case is under investigation, but it is too early to say whether it is suspicious,” he said.

“What we do know is that it is inexplicable and we are working to close the family down as soon as possible.”
