A mother of two shared her dismay to discover that regular Vegemite toast she ordered for her young daughter was in fact something completely different.

Grace Jennings-Edquist, who lives in Sydney, took to Twitter on September 18 with a photo of the “toast” and insulting spread that was much lighter in color than the typical Vegemite.

She had ordered the breakfast dish for her young daughter, but immediately regretted it when she realized what it was.

“This artisan cafe culture has gone TOO FAR. Ordered Vegemite today for my young children’s toast. Daughter said it tasted ‘dirty’ and like nuts,” she explained.

EXPECTATION: Grace Jennings-Edquist, who lives in Sydney, took to Twitter on September 18 with a photo of the ‘toast’ and insulting spread that was much lighter in color than the typical Vegemite

REALITY: ‘Turns out the cafe only does ‘homemade Vegemite’, a vegan concoction with sesame and soy,’ she said

“Apparently the cafe only does ‘homemade Vegemite’, a vegan concoction with sesame and soy.

‘Luckily my baby isn’t allergic. Hard no!’

While Ms. Jennings-Edquist found it difficult enough to come to terms with buying a liniment that wasn’t actually Vegemite, the addition of allergy-prone ingredients was more of a concern.

Her followers were quick to suggest that this would pose a problem for many parents.

“At least they shouldn’t call it Vegemite. Once upon a time, a cafe offered a “chocolate milkshake” on its menu, which was actually flavored with a BS vegan peanut brownie instead of chocolate syrup. My son had an anaphylactic reaction to it,” one woman replied.

“It looks like mold on bread, ewww. They should also tell you in advance what it is because, as you pointed out, there is a little (big, big, serious) thing called ‘allergies,’ said another.

A third pointed out that Vegemite is already vegan, so there’s really no need to make your own recipe if that’s your main concern.

‘What makes Vegemite not vegan? Salty. Leftover yeast. Malt extract. Don’t those ingredients get a green check mark?’ Said another.
