Fed-up mum reveals the sad truth about living in Sydney in 2024: ‘Everyone is rude, stressed and anti-social’

A mother has branded Sydney a ‘nightmare’ full of people who are ‘rude, stressed and don’t know how to interact’.

Sonya Drivas claimed that she feels like “everyone is tense” and that there is “no kindness” left.

The fed-up mother shared her observations on a TikTok video after noticing the behavior of others at work and in public.

“I was talking to my sister yesterday and we both agreed on something: Sydney is so damned,” she said.

“I thought it was just me, everyone’s tired, everyone’s stressed, everyone’s angry, everyone’s just over it.”

“It feels like everyone is on edge – whether on the road, in malls, in the workplace with customers – everyone is just tense, snappy, irritable and rude,” Sonya continued.

“It’s almost like there’s no kindness anymore.”

Sonya said it now feels like a rarity when someone is nice.

“Are we so far gone as a society where kindness is now rare?” she asked.

‘I’m literally on the bus or train and everyone is just looking at their phone. Everyone is just weird, antisocial, angry, tired and stressed. I remember growing up when it was normal to talk [and] socialize, even if it was a stranger.

‘That’s just gone. That Australian culture has disappeared. You no longer get on the bus and ask: ‘How is your day buddy?’ It’s just fucking weird.”

Sonya shared a recent experience she had on a bus when she complimented another woman by saying she liked her shoes.

However, the woman just stared blankly and said a quick “thank you” before looking back at her phone.

“I just said, ‘I love your shoes,'” Sonya said, adding, “She looked up at me like I had just said something really crazy.”

The answer made her wonder if others can still talk.

‘Everyone is on their phone and doesn’t really know how to talk in real life anymore. It’s like I have to be a robot,” she said.

‘For me, society is just weird, but Sydney is a nightmare. Everyone is just angry, moody, irritable, stressed and I don’t think anyone knows how to socialize.”

No doubt her observation is probably the result of the rising cost of living and the housing crisis (stock image)

The video has now been viewed more than 99,000 times and others agreed with her.

“Australia is turning into America,” one person wrote.

“People don’t even wave anymore when you give way on the road,” said another.

“It has become socially unacceptable to socialize,” a third added.

“Everyone is in survival mode due to the cost of living and the events of the last four years,” someone else wrote.

Another said: ‘That’s just Sydney culture unfortunately. That is not the case everywhere.’

One woman added: “That’s why I live in the Blue Mountains. I will never go back to urban Sydney.”

But some pointed out that this may be because Sydney is a large, expensive city to live in compared to other cities in the country.

‘They’re just girls who live in the big city. It’s been that way for centuries. When I go home to Brissie the first thing I notice is the friendliness of the customer service,” said one.
