Mum influencer reveals hack to stop bread going mouldy and it only costs 60p

A home and wellness influencer has unveiled a groundbreaking hack that promises to extend the life of your bread without breaking the bank.

The problem is all too familiar: you buy a fresh loaf of bread, but notice that within a few days it is fluffy with mold.

For many, this leads to a frustrating trip to the trash.

But according to one Mrs Hinch fan, there’s a simple, cost-effective solution lurking in most people’s fridges – and it only costs a few pennies.

Mother-of-two Katya Mackle, also known as @katya.macle on TikTok, regularly shares her life, home decor and food hacks with her 79,000 followers.

In June 2022, the content creator uploaded a video that helps fresh food stretch further, with the caption: “Here are some tips for food storage.”

In addition to her advice on storing various fresh produce, including using paper towels and apple cider vinegar to prevent berries from going moldy and wrapping banana tails in foil, Katya revealed her top tip for making fresh bread last longer.

The main vegetable, often used in salads and soups to prevent your bread from spoiling quickly, is a simple celery stalk.

In the images, Katya explains: ‘To make the bread last longer, I use celery. Bread does not dry or mold for two to three weeks.’

She demonstrates the hack by opening a bag of soft white country bread from M&S and carefully sliding celery sticks onto the end of the load so that they sit on top of the slices.

The influencer emphasizes that using celery does not change the taste of the bread or make it smell.

Katya’s solution to moldy bread doesn’t require expensive equipment or products, as a pack of celery costs 69p at Tesco, or just 60p with a Clubcard.

More than 250 comments were received from viewers expressing their relief at news of the hack, while others shared their own methods for making their loaves last longer.

One person wrote: ‘Omg. I just threw away food worth over £50. I’m glad I came across this now.’

Another said: ‘I started putting my bread in the fridge. It lasts forever,” while a third wrote: “I keep my bread in the fridge. Stays good for weeks. But I love the celery hack! Maybe give it a try!’

Another person advised: ‘Just put bread in the freezer, it will last over a month and then take it out the day before you want to use it and keep it in the fridge.’

One person asked, “Doesn’t the celery give a strange smell or taste to the bread?” to which Katya responded: ‘Actually not!!’

It comes after a food expert revealed which foods you can still eat even if they’ve gone moldy – and the foods that will send you to the ER.
