An Australian mother has shared her plight to an online audience after her sister-in-law blamed her for her daughter’s “growing breasts” and going through puberty at age nine.
Rachel*, from Adelaide, told children’s spot that she was shocked by the accusation, with her in-laws Jess* insinuating how much chicken she is feeding the young girl because it is “full of hormones.”
Rachel was “furious” at the comment, especially since this wasn’t the first time her sister-in-law had hinted that she wasn’t living a healthy lifestyle.

Rachel said she was catching up with Jess and their kids were playing together when Jess made the awkward comment.
The conversation turned to puberty and Rachel mentioned that her nine-year-old is going through it right now.
Rachel said she felt comforted to be able to talk about the subject with Jess, who… was supportive until she said her daughter started growing breasts.
“I saw her face change in understanding and support to a face that looked like the penny had dropped and something I’d said had put together elusive pieces of the puzzle,” Rachel recalled.
‘Do you eat a lot of chicken? They pump chickens full of hormones and that can cause breast growth in people, you know,” Jess said.
Rachel was “furious” about the comment, especially since Jess had hinted that Rachel hasn’t been cooking “healthy food” for her family before.

The mother said the comment was ridiculous for several reasons.
First, Rachel argued that “puberty was a bad thing” and that her daughter is too young.
Rachel explained that chicken is hormone-free in Australia and has been for over 40 years, so there’s no way her choice of product influenced puberty.
Despite the incident, Rachel has no intention of cutting ties with her sister-in-law. However, she plans to cook a roast chicken the next time Jess comes to visit.
