Multiple victims have been shot after a gunman went on the rampage at an acute psychiatric hospital in New Hampshire.

The New Hampshire Department of Homeland Security said “several people” were injured after the attack in Concord.

A spokesperson later revealed that the gunman was dead and that police were searching the grounds for any accomplices.

It comes less than a month after a mass shooting near Maine in which gunman Robert Card slaughtered 18 people and injured 13.

Concord police, fire and rescue teams responded to New Hampshire Hospital in Concord just after 3:30 p.m. for reports of an active shooter.

Around 3:45 p.m., police reported that the shooter had been shot and 15 minutes later it was confirmed that the suspect was handcuffed and in custody.

The Concord District Court was evacuated and officers searched the state hospital floor by floor for other suspects in the incident.

Parts of the hospital were still being evacuated as of 4:30 p.m. and dozens of employees were in the process of leaving the building.

New Hampshire State Police said, “Troopers are currently investigating a shooting at New Hampshire State Hospital in Concord.”

A spokesperson added: ‘There are multiple victims. Additional updates will be released as they become available.”

New Hampshire Homeland Security and Emergency Management said, “We are aware of the situation at New Hampshire Hospital. Police are on scene and responding. Additional updates will be made available.

“In connection with the New Hampshire Hospital shooting, a media staging area will be set up at the Memorial Field on South Fruit Street in Concord. Additional updates will be made available at this location.”

It added: “The situation at New Hampshire Hospital is under control. The scene remains active. The suspect is deceased.’
