Witnesses reported that the plane was trying to land at the airport when it caught fire, causing the plane to catch fire.
The Kill Devil Hills Fire Department and other local fire departments responded to the scene, according to the National Parks Service (NPS) edition.
The plane crashed about 90 miles south of Virginia Beach, Virginia KLJB News radio.
Campbell’s devastated family said he graduated from Trinity Christian and was a high-ranking officer in the military local news report. A photo on his social media showed Campbell smiling in the cockpit of a plane.
The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the crash.
The Wright Brothers National Memorial was closed on Sunday.
