Multiple people electrocuted in ‘freak accident’ in Indiana swimming pool

Five people swimming in a pool at an Indiana home were electrocuted in a “freak accident,” police said.

Two adults and three minors under the age of 16 were injured by electric shocks while in the pool, CBS 4 Indiana reported.

Officers were dispatched to 2600 High Street in Logansport around 2:35 p.m. and discovered that a pool pump cord had somehow become pinched.

The exposed wire came into contact with the pool water, sending electricity through the pool in which the victims were swimming.

Police confirmed there were no fatalities, but all five people were taken to various local hospitals. The victims were said to be in a “serious but stable” condition.

A police spokesperson told DailyMail.com that all victims remain in stable condition.

The spokesperson also confirmed that there is no suspicion of a criminal offense.

Electrocution in swimming pools is extremely rare in the United States.

Data from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) shows that between 2002 and 2018, 33 people died from electric shocks in swimming pools and spas.

The same number of people were injured under similar circumstances.

According to the CPSC, you’ll know if you’re getting an electric shock in the water if you experience tingling or muscle cramps.

You may also find that you are unable to move at all or that you feel as if there is something holding your feet in place.

The agency’s advice is to get out of the water without touching a metal ladder (if available), if possible, as this increases the risk of electric shock.

The agency is urging people outside the pool to immediately turn off all power to avoid becoming victims of a rescue attempt in the electrified water.
