Multiple people have been shot dead at a Florida Dollar General store following an incident in Northwest Jacksonville.
Emergency services, including a SWAT team, rushed to the scene on Kings Road, Northwest Jacksonville, around 1 p.m.
Jacksonville Mayor Donna Deegan confirmed there are “a number of fatalities.” The shooter is believed to be dead by now.
Police cordoned off the place on Kings Road.
“This is unacceptable,” Deegan said. “One shooting is too many, but these mass shootings are really hard to bear.”
She was seen at the scene and spoke to emergency services.
Angie Nixon, the District 13 State Representative, who represents the ward, said the situation was “tragic.”
“These are things we want to try to avoid by making sure our communities have all the resources and making sure we create a climate of love and not tension,” Nixon said. News4JAX.
She tried to help people stay calm and offer support.
Councilor Ju’Coby Pittman said she was devastated to see the whole community more upset.
“I’m tired of seeing all the shootings,” Pittman said. “The people in this community are hurting.”
The northbound and southbound lanes of King Street near the Canal Street intersection are closed.
Residents have been asked to avoid the area.
