Multiple injuries reported after July 4 fireworks malfunction in Utah stadium, news report says
PROVO, Utah — Several people were injured when fireworks misfired and hit a crowd at a football stadium during a Fourth of July celebration in Utah, police said.
The accident happened during the opening ceremonies of the Stadium of Fire event at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo, Brigham Young University’s on-campus football stadium. KUTV-TV reported.
According to Janna-Lee Holland, spokeswoman for the Provo police, the exact number and severity of injuries sustained during the annual celebration are not yet known.
Videos posted on social media show fireworks being released from the cluster launched into the air above the field and landing among the rows of spectators in the stands in the outdoor arena.
After a brief delay, BYU police gave organizers permission to proceed with the event, which took place the following day: Jonas Brothersreported KUTV.
Provo and BYU police did not immediately respond to emails from The Associated Press seeking more information.
