Mrs Brown’s Boys branded ‘drivel and totally unfunny’ by viewers as controversial BBC comedy series returns to screens after ten years

The sitcom, created by Brendan O’Carroll, has been a staple of Christmas TV programming for more than a decade, with the new series being the first since 2013.

However, the new episode left fans disappointed as many wondered why the show was being ‘resuscitated’.

Someone shared their thoughts on Twitter, writing: “Today is a sad day for humanity, a new season of Mrs Brown’s Boys starts tonight.”

Another added: ‘The entire country is definitely NOT into Mrs Brown’s Boys. I think it’s nonsense and not funny at all.’

A few people seemed to be happy with the news, with one writing: ‘I’m absolutely thrilled there is a brand new series of Mrs Brown’s Boys.

‘I made sure I put it in my diary and then made sure I recorded it so I could watch it again. I’m so excited and I can’t wait.’

Another delighted fan shared: ‘Thanks everyone for the new episodes, so glad you’re back. I’m fighting the temptation to binge them all on iPlayer and I think the temptation will win. Thanks again.’

Last month, the BBC confirmed that the series would return for a further four episodes on Friday, September 8 at 9.30pm.

Earlier this year, show creator Brendan – who also leads the cast as matriarch Agnes Brown – admitted that the show has been ‘thwarted twice’ due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as it was originally scheduled to hit screens in 2021 to appear.

Speaking about the new series, the 67-year-old comic said, “This miniseries was actually scheduled for 2021.

‘After being thwarted twice, first by Covid-19 and then by a post-Covid studio shortage, it’s fantastic to finally get the chance to make this happen.

“Fasten your seat belts and hold on to your hats!”

BBC bosses are delighted the show is back, with Josh Cole, head of comedy at BBC Studios, and Steven Canny, executive producer, saying: ‘There’s no one like Mrs Brown.

‘An absolute force of outrageous humor and slapstick that makes the audience hooked and laughing. It’s great to be back.’

Comedy director Jon Petrie added: ‘BBC Comedy is delighted to announce that, ten years on from the last full series of Mrs Brown’s Boys, millions of viewers in the UK will be delighted to hear that Brendan Agnes and the family brings back. together for a brand new miniseries of his award-winning show.”

Just 2.4 million people tuned in to BBC One to watch the Christmas episode, titled Shining Mammy, with viewers claiming it is now ‘unwatchable’.
