Mount Marlow, Whitsundays crash: Five people left fighting for life and four injured in horror smash

Five people are fighting for their lives and four people have been injured after a horrific two-vehicle crash near a popular holiday destination.

The crash occurred on Shute Harbour Road, in Mount Marlow, south-west of Airlie Beach, north Queensland, at 1.08pm on Sunday.

Six people were rushed to Proserpine Hospital after emergency services, including police and fire services, arrived at the scene.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia that two people suffered life-threatening injuries.

Two others were assessed at the scene for serious injuries, while four passengers were taken to hospital in stable condition.

The spokesman said one person was airlifted to Mackay Hospital in critical condition. A total of nine people were injured in the crash.

Shute Harbour Road, which connects Proserpine and Airlie Beach, is closed in both directions and is expected to remain closed for some time.

Motorists are urged to avoid the area. Detours and road signs will allow drivers to follow alternative routes.

Police are on the scene and are investigating.
