Motsi Mabuse revealed that her colorful Strictly Come Dancing hairstyles have set her free after years of living under the oppressive Apartheid government in South Africa.

The BBC judge, 41, who experienced racism as a young dancer, said she will never forget that treatment and that it is something you will carry with you for the rest of your life.

The star admitted that styling her locks on the dance show helps her heal from those past traumas.

She said The sun: ‘So even things that I love to celebrate now that seem so little to other people, like celebrating my own hair – the way my hair grows, what I can do with my hair – it’s something I did as a kid. did not see. It was always more like, “Hide your hair, control your hair”.’

Motsi, who first dreamed of becoming a lawyer before moving to Germany at 18 to dance.

She married her dance partner Timo Kulczak, 45, but they divorced after 11 years, in 2014.

A year later she found love again with another dancer Evgenij Voznyuk, 38, and they married in 2017 and share a daughter, who was born the following year.

After becoming a mother, Motsi revealed that her past traumas began to heal as she was increasingly forced out of her comfort zone.

She explained that when she was a kid her parents were always in “survival mode” and were never clingy, which she said was the opposite of the type of mom she wanted to be.

The doting mother explained how her experience growing up with her parents influenced the way she raises her daughter.

She continued: ‘I am very affectionate with my child, but we weren’t because, for our parents, in their minds, it was just, ‘keep these kids safe’. All of that affects you later.

“At dance competitions when it was clearly unfair and your parents say, ‘No, it wasn’t unfair, you should be better’. Very early on, our boundaries were taken away from us and I’m now learning to say a little ‘no’ without having to question myself.”

The dancer rose to fame in Germany in 2007 dancing to Let’s Dance and later joined the jury in 2011.

She later replaced Darcey Bussell on the Strictly panel in 2019 and had to keep the gig top secret at the time by flying into the country with a false name.
