Motorists are baffled as council replaces confusing twisting lines and ‘alien landing pad’ road markings with shaky track that ‘looks like something out of The Wizard of Oz’

Motorists in a seaside town have been baffled when the council replaced erratic road markings and a white circle that looks like an ‘alien landing pad’ with a yellow path that ‘looks like something out of The Wizard of Oz’.

North Somerset Council sparked anger in the town of Clevedon earlier this year when it painted squiggly lines on the historic Victorian seafront as part of redevelopment works.

It then caused more confusion by painting what appeared to be the start of a roundabout – an ‘alien landing pad’ by the locals.

But now people in Clevedon say workers removed the winding lines and roundabout last night and built a new clear path.

Residents said the new yellow path looks like something out of The Wizard Of Oz.

Furious residents took to social media this morning to share their distaste for the road markings.

One of them wrote: ‘It looks like NSC is back at night stripping lines and removing the coastal roundabout. How much will this cost us? Why?

At night, contractors worked for eight hours painting new markers — thick white lines separating the bike path from the road.”

One person added: “Well I woke up to this (although with 8 hours of noise it was hard to sleep!) This is just one more night’s work from the ‘yellow contractors’, three more to go!!!

‘It looks horrible. When we tried to get permission for a skylight on the back of our house, no sorry it’s a conservation area!!!!!!!! I’m dropping my case.’

Another resident said, “I can only assume the white pieces across the street are pedestrian crossings waiting for the black lines to be painted on them.” God knows what those long white lines are for.’

Another wrote: “Completely mental!”

North Somerset Council said the brightly colored winding lines were part of a new design aimed at making the road feel narrower and slowing down traffic.

They were also carried out as part of plans to build a new beach cycle path along the coast road.

The road plan includes a separate 400-meter cycle path to remove cyclists from the ball.

The plan is to move traffic away from the city’s seafront, which is home to several brightly colored houses.

The new cycle path will become part of the ‘Pier to Pier’ link between Weston-super-Mare and Clevedon, with the adjacent road also becoming one-way.
