Mother and son struck by drunk driver for second time in nine months
A new mother is counting her blessings and she and her son survived a head-on collision with a drunk driver in North Carolina – the second time in nine months she has been involved in a car crash with a drunk driver.
Chelsea Evans was traveling with her 9-month-old son, St. Jires, in Fayetteville when their vehicle was struck head-on by a car that crossed the center line on Gillis Hill Road on Sunday around 9 p.m.
“I was in the car with my nine-month-old son,” an injured Evans said WRAL from her hospital bed.
‘The impact was so severe that the airbags went off and my car battery died. I couldn’t open the door to get to my son.”
Evans suffered a broken hand, internal bleeding in her chest cavity, multiple bone bruises and airbag burns.
Her son, who was in a car seat, survived without serious injury.
“It’s a miracle because the force of the impact could easily have taken our lives,” Evans said.
“However, God intervened and saved us.”

This is Evans’ second collision with a drunk driver in just nine months.
While pregnant with St. Jires, she was hit from behind by a drunk driver as she returned home from a maternity photo shoot.
That driver attempted to flee and struck Evans’ vehicle a second time.
“She backed away to flee the scene and hit me again,” Evans said.
“That crash made me start contracting and going into labor,” Evans said.
She had to undergo an emergency caesarean section that saved her child’s life.
Police have identified Calvin McDonald as the driver responsible for Sunday’s crash.
He is currently in the hospital and will be charged with driving under the influence and failure to maintain lane upon release.
When asked what message she had for McDonald, Evans told WRAL, “To get his life together because it almost cost him two lives.”
The young mother’s injuries leave her unable to work as both jobs require the use of both hands.
