Most programmers will be using AI coding systems by 2028

Gartner has predicted that as many as three in four enterprise software engineers will leverage the power of AI code assistants by 2028, up from just one in ten in 2023.

The survey of nearly 600 respondents worldwide shows that nearly two-thirds (63%) of organizations are testing, deploying or have already deployed AI code assistants, highlighting the critical role this efficiency-enhancing technology plays in programming.

The report discusses the extensive and far-reaching benefits of artificial intelligence beyond simple code generation and completion.

Programming set for big AI boost

Gartner claims that AI assistants will revolutionize the coding world by serving as collaboration tools to improve efficiency by encouraging brainstorming. Artificial intelligence also promises to help programmers enhance their skills and build proficiency in programming frameworks, which in turn positively impacts job satisfaction and retention.

Philip Walsh, Senior Principal Analyst at Gartner, offered insight into how companies can really benefit from AI: “Traditional ROI frameworks steer engineering leaders toward metrics focused on cost reduction. This limited perspective fails to capture the full value of AI code assistants.”

Gartner compares AI coding assistants to an iceberg, with things like speed improvements, time savings and cost reduction emerging as clear benefits. Below the surface, however, companies and developers can unlock things like code quality and maintainability, customer experience, and a reduction in bugs and technical debt.

Walsh added: “To convey the full business value story for AI code assistants, software engineering leaders must connect value enablers to their impact, and then analyze the overall return to the organization.”
