Mornington Peninsula house goes up in flames after disastrous fireworks mishap – as tradie is hailed a hero for dragging a disabled women from her burning bedroom

A heroic hero rescued a disabled woman from her burning home after illegal fireworks set her bedroom ablaze on New Year's Eve.

The banned missiles smashed through the woman's bedroom window as she slept, setting her home in Tootgarook, on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula, on fire on Sunday.

The 57-year-old wheelchair-bound woman suffered burns to her arms and was taken to hospital but is expected to recover.

Footage shows flames engulfing the house, with sparks flying.

Jon Croft, a carpenter from Hillside, had been walking past the burning house and heard the woman's screams.

“About 50 percent of the room was on fire and she was trapped in there and it was getting worse by the second,” he told 9News.

Mr Croft filmed himself after saving the woman from the inferno.

“F****** s**** just went crazy,” he said in the video, before turning the camera to the house that went up in flames.

“I just dragged this bird out of her house.”

Mr Croft said he had managed to get into the bedroom through a window and things had blown up around him.

He escaped the ordeal with a few cuts and bruises and said he felt 'a bit shaky' as he recalled the shocking incident.

The victim's daughter, Taylor, was not home when the fire broke out, but said she was grateful for the man who saved her mother's life.

“I was very lucky, I'm very grateful that he did that,” she said.

It is understood the house fire started within 30 seconds of the fireworks going off across the road.

More than 60 incidents involving illegal fireworks were reported across the state on New Year's Eve.

People convicted of illegally using fireworks in Victoria can face stiff penalties, including fines of up to $96,155 and up to five years in prison.
