The Great Lakes Water Authority, which runs the water for the region, has estimated that repairs on the water main in the Lake Huron treatment facility may take as long as two weeks.

The GLWA says that they must engineer inspection of an important pipe in the water line as a replacement is prepared.

The state has begun heavy duty efforts to distribute bottled water in several of the communities affected, but free water has become scarce in places like Rochester.

Shelby Township Supervisor Rick Stathakis told Local 4: ‘Today, we only got a thousand cases in. I say only, well tomorrow we’re getting 500 cases.’

Officials have urged residents to not only boil water, but put a lid on it while it’s on the stove.

If you’re unable to boil water, the GLWA advises the following in an FAQ: ‘Using a clean, sanitized container, disinfect tap water by adding 8 drops, about 1/8 teaspoon, of plain unscented household bleach to a gallon of water.

‘Thoroughly mix the solution and allow the water to stand for 30 minutes. If the water is cloudy, repeat the process. Use a container with a cap or cover for disinfecting and storing water to be used for drinking. This will prevent re-contamination’.

They’ve added that while water is still safe if you don’t swallow it for showers and baths, the best drinking water and water for brushing your teeth available is bottled or from alternative sources.
