The Indian Patent Office has granted over 1 lakh patents in the past year due to steps taken by the government to further strengthen the intellectual property rights ecosystem, an official statement said on Saturday.
It was also said that there was a notable increase in the number of Geographical Indications (GI) registrations, showing a threefold increase compared to the previous year.
Currently, there are 573 Geographical Indications registered in India.
98 new geographical indications have been registered in the period 2023-2024 and a further 62 will be registered by March 31 this year.
Similarly, the number of tax, copyright and design registrations to date stood at 36,378 and 27,819 respectively.
“Every six minutes, one technology seeks IP protection in India. In 2023, a record number of 90,300 patent applications were received. The patent office has granted more than one lakh patents in the last year (March 15, 2023 to March 14, 2023). -2024). 250 patents were granted every working day,” the Ministry of Trade and Industry said.

It added that the Patent Rules, 2024 have been notified and these rules have introduced several provisions aimed at simplifying the process of obtaining and administering patents, thereby facilitating an enabling environment for inventors and creators.
The updated rules have introduced a unique provision for a new ‘Certificate of Inventorship’ to recognize the contribution of inventors to the patented invention.
In addition, the deadline for providing data on filing foreign applications in a specified form has been changed from six months from the date of filing the application to three months from the date of issuance of the first examination report.
“Considering the rapid pace of technology, the time limit for submitting examination applications has been reduced from 48 months to 31 months from the date of priority of the application or from the date of submission of the application, whichever is earlier,” said the report.
