- NT father gets 21 years in prison for depraved abuse
- The judge praised the daughter’s courage in speaking out
A Northern Territory father who subjected his daughter to horrific sexual abuse, including rape, for years has been jailed for 21 years.
The man, in his 40s and who cannot be identified for legal reasons, pleaded guilty in the High Court to a long series of ‘depraved’ sexual attacks on the girl.
The court heard the perpetrator had abused the girl ‘every few days’ for years after taking custody of her in her mid-teens and trying to make her think such behavior was wrong.
Crown prosecutor Marty Aust said the man pretended to be concerned about the girl’s well-being, but “he instead isolated her, manipulated her and engaged in deviant and destructive behavior,” the prosecutor’s report said. NT news.
The prosecutor detailed how the perpetrator plied the girl with drugs and alcohol and raped her, including in public places and in “humiliating” scenarios, to the point where she was so harmed that she eventually “gave up and did not resist” resisted him’.
The man was sentenced to 21 years in prison by the NT Supreme Court for years of abuse
Judge Jenny Blokland said his actions demanded “denunciation in the strongest terms.”
“These are some of the most depraved and inhumane acts committed by one person against another that a court will hear,” she said.
‘The facts indicate from the outset a serious degree of depravity on the part of (the perpetrator). He told (the victim) how normal it was for a daughter to be sexually attracted to her father.”
“Ordinary people who adhere to widely accepted community values on which there is broad consensus cannot understand how anyone could have reached this terrible place in their lives where such transgressions can be committed by themselves.”
She also praised the victim for having the strength to speak out.
Judge Blockland this week sentenced the man to 21 years in prison with a non-parole period of 18 years.
However, she warned him that he might never be released because he met the criteria for a serious sex offender who can be held longer than his sentence if he is deemed a danger to the community.
