Sunrise host Monique Wright SNAPS broadcasts live during a heated argument with Matt Doran over the viral “scallops potato vs cake” debate.

A heated argument broke out on the set of Sunrise on Wednesday after McDonald’s announced its new potato-based snack.

The fast-food giant confirmed on Tuesday that it will start serving ‘chicken salt potato scallops’, sparking an online debate over whether the fried item was actually called ‘potato pie’, ‘scallop’ or ‘ fritter’.

Co-hosts Monique Wright and Matt Doran tried to resolve the long-unanswered question, but found they couldn’t agree.

“This outpouring of support for ‘scallops’ is completely and utterly misplaced,” Matt said, adding: “Do you know what a scallop is? An edible mollusk with a rib-shaped shell.’

“It’s that too,” Monique chimed in, as images of the chefs preparing the product flashed across the screen.

‘But it’s a potato pie! It’s a potato pie,” Matt insisted, prompting Monique to snap back, “What kind of pie is fried? The cakes are not tasty!

Matt went on to argue that the product was a ‘pie’ because it did not have a ‘ribbed edge’ like a scallop.

Monique scoffed, noting that the product “has no icing” and therefore cannot be referred to as a “cake”.

It’s fried. What kind of cake is fried? she said.

Sunrise reporter Mylee Hogan also supported the word ‘scallop’, while sportscaster Mark Beretta strongly supported the word ‘pie’.

At the end of the segment, the team agreed to disagree, but found common ground by acknowledging that French fries are delicious no matter what they’re called.

Seasoned with classic chicken salt, McDonald’s new potato scallop features a crispy tempura coating and fluffy mash.

The item will be available for a limited time at restaurants nationwide and through McDelivery beginning Wednesday, January 11.
