Moms open up about the realities of being a parent ahead of Mother’s Day

Soon it will be Mother’s Day and people across the country are expected to shower their mothers with presents.

But it seems being a mom can be a thankless task, with dozens taking to TikTok ahead of Sunday celebrations to expose the realities of parenthood.

Some even went so far as to say that, rather than Mother’s Day, they would prefer a “mother society” that would allow “raising children in a world where mothers are expected no more than fathers.”

And others exposed feelings of being overwhelmed and “depressed, disturbed, insane and anxious.”

One of the most popular content creators to score on Mother’s Day is Canada’s Libby Ward, who has amassed over 1.1 million followers on TikTok

In one of her latest videos, posted earlier this week, she questioned the whole concept of Mother's Day ahead of Sunday's celebration.

One of the most popular content creators is Libby Ward, from Canada, who has amassed more than 1.1 million followers on TikTok where she is proud to share the “diary of an honest mother”.

In one of her latest videos, posted earlier this week, she questioned the whole concept of Mother’s Day.

Speaking to the camera, she candidly said, “Sometimes I think I don’t want to celebrate anymore. I don’t want special days – Christmas, birthdays, Easter, Mother’s Day.

Not because I don’t like parties [but] because I don’t like being thrown into an abyss of emotions that I can’t get out of.

“Instead of saying, ‘Yes, I’m a mom, I’m doing great,’ special days just evoke a lot of feelings.”

Libby adds, “You know what would be better than Mother’s Day? A parent company – raising children in a world where mothers are not expected to do more than fathers are expected to do or where mothers are valued for the value they provide, even if they do unpaid work at home.

“That people really listen to what we say – not just as a child, but as a healthcare provider. We say we’re not okay, do something.’

The social media star concludes Mother’s Day makes her “wonder what happened to my identity, contemplate everything I’ve ever done as a mother, wonder if I have what it takes.”

“It doesn’t matter what issues we may or may not have with our own mother, or why society just forgets about us, even though we have a very important job that affects everyone else,” she continued.

She posted the post alongside a caption that read, “I love being a mom, but it’s complicated and Mother’s Day stirs up a lot of feelings, so if you feel the same way, you’re not alone.”

And social media users flooded the comments to reveal that they, too, felt the same way.

One user wrote: ‘100% this. One day a year I don’t want flowers or chocolate. I don’t want regular me-time to go crazy.’

Another added, “I hate Mother’s Day for a lot of personal reasons. People just forget that the mother being celebrated is also a person with history.’

And a third began: “I generally hate Mother’s Day. I don’t feel valued or overly loved. I’ve now started planning a spa day with my besties.”

But Libby isn’t the only content creator to voice her grievances about motherhood in recent weeks.

She said being a mother was often “overwhelming because there’s no handbook for this.”

“You can vent all you want, you can go cry all you want, but at the end of the day, all that responsibility is still on you,” she added.

“It makes you almost trap — beat, in a sense — it’s so hard.”

The mother of one child, whose son is three years old, concludes, “Don’t get me wrong, it’s so beautiful, but it’s literally the most mind f*** experience of your entire life.”
