Moment police rescue woman stabbed 29 times and left to die by ex-partner she met on Match.com

This is the shocking moment when police officers rescued a woman who had been stabbed 29 times and left for dead by her abusive ex-partner, whom she met on dating site Match.com.

Martina Turner, 54, suffered horrific injuries that have left her with permanent scars, including numerous stab wounds, bleeding into her heart, two broken ribs and a burn on her leg.

Ms Turner amazingly survived the horrific knife attack at her home in Winlaton Mill, Gateshead on 21 May 2020, despite being stabbed so violently that the knife broke.

Her then-boyfriend Steven Wood, 55, had locked her in her home before fleeing to Redheugh Bridge and throwing himself into the River Tyne after the attack.

Shocking footage shows the moment Northumbria police broke in by smashing a window and Tina hid in a cupboard covered in a pool of her own blood.

Wood, who is bipolar, became furious after Tina told him she was going out later that day.

Paranoid that Mrs. Turner did not want to spend time with him, Wood grabbed a knife from the kitchen drawer and ran at her from behind and began stabbing her so brutally that the knife broke.

Undeterred, he chose another knife and continued to attack his partner of two years, despite her pleas for her life and her pleas for help.

Horrifyingly, he then told Martina, “I have to finish you off, I’m not going to jail for you,” during the savage attempt to kill her.

It was only after stabbing a knife in her chest that he called his son and confessed that he had done something “bad.”

As the conversation took place, Tina was able to whisper quietly for help before Wood left the premises, locking the doors and hiding her key.

He then drove to Redheugh Bridge in Newcastle and jumped into the River Tyne but was rescued from the water by a police boat.

Within minutes an emergency call was activated and paramedics, officers and the trauma helicopter were all on the scene.

CCTV footage released by police shows officers rescuing Ms Turner after she managed to grab her phone and dial 999.

She was taken to hospital with life-changing injuries and stab wounds all over her body.

Last year, Wood, of no fixed address, was sentenced to life in prison at Newcastle Crown Court after admitting attempted murder.

He must serve at least 12 years behind bars before he can apply for parole.

Martina said after the case: ‘Too many lives have been destroyed by domestic violence and every victim will have to live with their personal trauma for the rest of their lives, including myself.

“However, justice has been done.

And even though it was very emotional for me to explain how this totally unprovoked assault with life-changing injuries to myself happened and changed my life forever, I’m happy to be able to move forward with my recovery and keep fighting for more justice for victims and more awareness and generate donations for charities such as GNAAS and National Domestic Abuse.

“Please can I also take this opportunity to thank everyone.

“Since the attack on myself, people have been above and beyond kind and supportive.

“My whole village came together and supported my children and myself to this day.

“I also want to thank the Northumberland Police, the Gateshead Domestic Violence Team, all the RVI staff who looked after my rescue, medical needs and recovery, my 3 wonderful children and German family, my friends and colleagues at Newcastle College and not to thank you forget my beautiful emotional support dog Tove.’
