Shortly afterwards an emergency alert was issued and the Spanish coast guard rushed to the scene with its boats, followed by local police.

Shocking footage showed the ship off balance on the blue waters around Kefalonia, a popular island in the Ionian Sea famous as the setting for Captain Corelli’s Mandolin.

The footage shows a private boat at the scene, with harbour guards monitoring the situation.

Waves can be seen crashing against the back of the yacht, which is now some distance from the shoreline.

The yacht eventually ran aground in the Bay of Evretis, where it was anchored.

However, it was later claimed that the influx occurred because one of the crew members left a side door open and did not have time to close it when the weather changed, local media reported.

Five crew and passengers on board were safely rescued from the ship.
