Terrifying footage shows the moment a knifeman brandished a huge machete inside a busy McDonald’s restaurant before being tasered by police.

Officers ducked into the packed fast food chain in central Birmingham on Saturday night after being alerted by shocked patrons.

Video footage obtained by the Birmz Is Grime blog shows a hooded man wielding a huge 12-inch knife near the counter.

An onlooker is heard saying ‘yoyo yo, he’s got the shaft on’ just before the suspect is tasered by a police officer standing at the doorway.

Four officers then rush in to arrest the man lying on the floor as witnesses can be heard screaming in the background.

The McDonald’s on ‘the ramp’ is one of the busiest in the city center and is meters from Birmingham’s Grand Central shopping center and New Street railway station.

West Midlands Police said a 17-year-old boy was charged with possession of a knife after being arrested in the early hours of Sunday.

A police spokesman said: ‘We charged a teenager with possession of a knife after being called into McDonald’s in central Birmingham at around 4.40am yesterday (23rd July).

A 17-year-old boy who cannot be named for legal reasons was arrested within minutes of the call and three knives were recovered.

“Fortunately, no one was hurt, but the restaurant staff was shocked by the incident.”

Police claimed the suspect was not tasered during the incident and only had ‘red dots’, despite footage showing him falling to the ground.

The spokesman added: “The teen was not tasered, but was given a red dot to ensure the safety of others.

‘He was due to appear at Birmingham Magistrates Court this morning (Mon).’

A spokesperson for McDonald’s said: ‘We are aware of an incident that took place at our Birmingham New Street restaurant in the early hours of Sunday morning.

“Our restaurant team called the police who were quickly on the scene, we will continue to work with the police on investigations into the incident.”
