  • Video footage shows the ‘incredible’ moment on the A12 at Colchester

This is when an ‘impatient’ elderly woman caught in a traffic jam moved roadworks cones to drive into an unblocked lane – only for an apparently irate signage worker to demand she get back in line .

Lorry driver Anthony Foulkes was waiting for an accident on the A12 near Colchester, Essex, on Tuesday when he witnessed a ‘brazen’ driver leave her Ford Fiesta ‘to escape traffic’.

The 46-year-old’s “incredible” video shows the woman walking into a roped off area separating the waiting cars from a free-flowing lane to break apart two rows of cones and create a gap.

To Anthony’s dismay, she gets back into her vehicle and takes a sharp right turn through the front row, appearing to be waiting for an opening to move into the other lane.

A “hero in high-viz” then confronts the woman and directs her to return to the traffic jam, escorts her as she backs up, then appears frustrated at having to put back the heavy cones she moved.

Anthony has since claimed that “a woman her age should know better” and thinks she was “too posh to wait.”

He claims that he and the impatient driver had to wait about 55 minutes for the accident to be resolved.

The video has been viewed more than 300,000 times, with users calling the incident “incredible” and another quipped that the woman should “meet Doris for bingo night.”

Anthony, from Preston, Lancashire, said: ‘She’s just impatient and too genteel to wait. I couldn’t believe she actually did it.

‘A lady her age should know better, if it was a boy of 20 I would understand. She couldn’t even lift the cones. Luckily, a hero showed up in a hi-viz.

“She had ants in her pants. She was out of her car in six minutes. She chatted with a few people in front and behind and then mustered up some courage.

“She moved them all wrong. She should have staggered the cones so that the openings were slanted so she wouldn’t have to make such a sharp turn left and then right. She screwed up.

“If she hadn’t been stopped, a truck could have arrived that couldn’t stop, it would have had to turn into the lane to his right that was moving in the opposite direction.

“The cones are there for a reason. You just have to deal with it. All others must. If someone has had an accident, you can’t help it.’

The incident, which happened around 1:50 p.m., occurred in an area where there is a countercurrent system, where a lane has been created that travels in the opposite direction to normal.

Anthony says it’s because road works are being carried out on the usual lanes, so and the accident caused the long delay.

His video, captioned ‘stuck on the A12, and this patient lady has no time to wait’, has been shared more than 2,000 times.

One comment: ‘Oh my god. Some people’s cheeks.’

Another quipped, “She’s got to meet Doris at the pub for a big bingo night.”

A third simply said, “Incredible.”
