Moment goalkeeper in Chile scores from his own box with 101-metre shot that could be a world record

Incredible moment when a goalkeeper scores with a 101-meter shot from his own area… with more than a little help from his shocked opponent

  • Goalkeeper Leandro Requena scored for the Cobresal club
  • Defeat rival goalkeeper Bryan Cortés from his own area
  • Requena’s shot is believed to be 101 meters away

Goalkeeper Leandro Requena is the toast of world football after scoring an incredible goal from his own area.

The 35-year-old plays club soccer for Cobresal in Chile, and left rival goalkeeper Bryan Cortes of Colo Colo red-faced on Sunday.

With his team up 2-0 in the 77th minute, Argentina’s Requena lashed out with a goal kick over halfway intended for one of his forwards.

To his astonishment, Cortés was left fighting.

Even as the glover ran frantically to stop the ball, it slipped into the net, causing chaos at the Estadio El Cobre.

Although the visiting team scored late in the game, Cobresal was left undeserved in the 3-1 victory.

The man of the hour later stated that he was astonished to find the back of the web.

I can not lie. I didn’t intend to score’, declared an honest Requena at the final whistle.

“Unfortunately for Cortés, the rebound killed him… but luckily it hit us.”

And in more good news for Requena, he may have written himself into the Guinness Book of World Records.

If validated, Requena’s ‘hit’ would surpass the record currently held by Tom King, who in 2021 scored a goal from 105 yards (96.01 meters) during a match between Newport County and Cheltenham Town in the League Two competition of England.

Requena’s forceful effort is believed to have come from a distance of 110.4 yards (101 meters).

For many soccer fans, Requena’s unusual feat evoked memories of great Paraguayan goalkeeper José Chilavert, who scored 67 goals throughout his decorated career.
