Shocking moment drink-driver with children on board loses control of his Audi RS4 and smashes head-on into another car

This is the moment a ‘selfish’ drunk driver in Wiltshire loses control of his car and drives into oncoming traffic with two children on board.

Simon Wright, from Malmesbury, loses control of his Audi RS4 in dashcam footage of the vehicle he collided head-on.

The 43-year-old man skidded his £70,000 motorbike on the B4042 after overtaking two cars as he left a roundabout at high speed.

He was just a seven-minute drive from his home in Parklands at the time and was injured, as was his front seat passenger.

Fortunately, the two children in the back of the Audi were treated for shock, but they were not injured.

The driver of the second vehicle can be heard in the footage immediately after the crash at 4.30pm on March 25 last year shouting ‘f***ing hell’

A cloud of smoke can be seen coming from the front of the two vehicles as he asks his passenger, who was clearly shaken by the incident, several times, “Are you OK?”

The driver and passenger of the second vehicle were taken to hospital, but were not seriously injured.

Emergency services arrived on the scene when Wright failed a breath test.

He was given a two-year driving ban, an 18-month suspended prison sentence and ordered to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work after pleading guilty to dangerous driving and drink driving at Swindon Crown Court on July 26.

He must also pay £2,000 compensation and a £187 surcharge.

Constable Luke Hobbs, of the Roads Policing Unit, said: ‘This style of driving, particularly under the influence of alcohol, is completely unacceptable on our roads and poses a significant danger to other road users.

‘It is incomprehensible that there were also young children in the car at that time.

‘Dangerous driving and drink driving are two of the five fatal offences most likely to result in serious injury or death on our roads. We are 100 per cent committed to tackling those who commit these offences and keeping our roads safe.

“I’m glad Wright was banned from the road for his selfish and thoughtless actions.”
