An Oakland lawmaker who voted to defund the police was forced to call police after her staff was allegedly attacked by gunmen in the crime-ridden city.
District 3 Councilmember Carroll Fife, who voted to take $17.4 million from police in 2021, expressed her gratitude to the Oakland Police Department after she said three of her detectives were attacked.
Fife said the young campaigners were handing out materials for her campaign when armed men began chasing them.
“This campaign season is spiraling out of control,” Fife said in an Instagram video posted at the scene Wednesday evening.

“I am grateful that we received the immediate response from OPD to receive this report.”
The Fife campaign incident comes three years after Fife led the effort to cut $17.4 million from the Oakland police budget over two years.
Shortly after the bill passed the City Council, however, former Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf was forced to reverse the defunding plan as crime exploded in the city.
Oakland was among politically liberal cities that reversed pledges made in the wake of the May 2020 killing of George Floyd to defund the police after a surge in violent crimes.
An Oakland-focused social media account claims that lifelong Oakland residents are fed up with Fife, whom they accuse of ignoring their complaints about crime.
One local resident claimed they had called Fife’s office 15 times this year to report ‘serious problems’, but has not been able to speak directly to the councilor.

“I live in her district, and while she likes to make campaign commercials about ‘doing the real work’ for her ‘constituents,’ I can confirm she has done nothing for us,” the local said.
Fife, a housing activist who was once homeless, founded the group Moms for Housing to “reclaim housing for the community from the big banks and real estate speculators.”
However, the group’s co-founder Misti Cross has said she “hasn’t kept her word” and is a “habitual liar.”
“We don’t want her to abandon us for another four years,” she said. ‘Enough of Fife.’
Oakland police told DailyMail.com on Friday that they are investigating the pistol-whipping incident involving Fine’s staffers, which occurred Wednesday around 7 p.m. in the 200 block of Fairmount Avenue.
“The victim reported to officers that they were walking with two others when three suspects approached,” police said in a statement.
“While the others continued, the victim was talking to the suspects when one of the suspects struck the victim with a firearm. The suspects then got into a vehicle and left the area in an unknown direction.”
